The popular ‘Reply’ series are returning this year with a third instalment. The series are continuing the trend of going deeper into the past as the production confirmed that ‘Reply 1988‘ is in the works.

Slightly stepping away from the original format, producer Shin Won Ho stated “This time, rather than a story about a first love, we plan to focus on the topic of family and neighbors.”  ‘Reply 1997‘ and ‘Reply 1994‘ both had a love triangle, one on the background focus of first wave of K-Pop music and fandoms, while the other focused on sports. Question is what ‘Reply 1998’ will bring from that time.

Sung-Dong-Il-and-Lee-Il-Hwa

Many things happened in 1988, such as the Seoul Olympics which can bring a lot of focus on culture and economic at the time, the participation of many famous Korean actors in Chinese movies and the 1988 College Festival. Also in 88’ there were many famous singers such as Cho Yong Pil, Lee Moon Sae and Kim Wan Sun. But with the shift of the format there a lot of possibilities for the new instalment.

While the casting is still ongoing, Sung Dong Il and Lee Il Hwa have been confirmed for the drama, marking their third time to act together as a married couple in another season of the “Reply” series.  Because of that there are some speculations about “Reply 1998″ telling their story from when they were young, and them playing themselves older versions in the present.

The creators of the hit Reply series are producer Shin Won Ho and scriptwriter Lee Yoo Jung. The series were the breakthroughs of talented actors like Seo In Guk, A Pink‘s Jung Eun Ji, Go Ara, Jung Woo, Tiny G’s Dohee and B1A4′s Baro.
